Holder, 100

Ivan Holder will celebrate his 100th birthday with a come-and-go reception for family and friends 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at Turkey Creek Golf Club, located on Oklahoma 51, west of Hennessey. He requests no gifts. Cards may be sent to 603 E. 4th, Hennessey, OK 73742.

Ivan was born April 17, 1914, in Dacoma. He lived in northwest Oklahoma, Texas and then in Clayton, N.M., where he graduated from high school in 1934.

He attended college at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva, where he received his BS degree in industrial arts in 1940.

He met his wife, Barbara Hedges, who also was attending college there. They were married Nov. 1, 1940.

He taught school for one year each at Richmond, Kaw City and Arnett, before enlisting in the military at Fort Sill.

He did his basic training in Florida and was stationed at Tinker AFB before being shipped out to the Philippines during World War II. He served in the Army about four years.

Following his discharge, he finished out the school year teaching at Cheyenne Valley. He then taught at Waukomis for two years and Garber High School for 26 years for a total of 34 years before he retired from teaching in 1974.

He took classes at OSU in Stillwater, where he received his MS degree in industrial education in 1954.

During their retirement in Hennessey, Ivan and Barbara celebrated their 50th anniversary on Nov. 1, 1990. They spent many winters in Phoenix, where Ivan continued to go until 2005. They enjoyed 19 years of retirement together before she died.
