Richard was born in Hennessey on July 9, 1933, the second son of Willie and Mary (Maly) Patocka. He was raised on the Hennessey family farm, along with his five brothers — Willard, Eugene, Bill, Alfred and Leroy.
He is a 1950 graduate of Hennessey High School and a 1969 graduate of O.T. Autry Technical Center.
Richard was drafted into the Army in 1953, and was stationed in England during the Korean War.
After returning to the states in 1955, he joined the 19th Corps Army Reserve unit, which later became a training battalion under the 95th Division. He attained the rank of company first sergeant and retired in 1990.
He met the love of his life at a relative’s wedding in 1952. Richard and Adella Pospisil were married Oct. 11, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hennessey, and celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary before Adella’s death in 2009.
They made their home in Hennessey before eventually moving to Enid. He worked for Hackney Iron and Steel Co. for more than eight years, and then worked for Central National Bank of Enid, where he retired in 1998, after 29 years of service.
Richard is a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, and is involved with the Knights of Columbus 1044, Our Daily Bread, Enid Noon AMBUCS, Garfield County Crime Stoppers, Men’s Garden Club, No. 1 Oklahoma Polka Club and Oklahoma Blood Institute, where he was the first platelet donor in Enid.
His children are Donna Patocka, Richard Patocka Jr., David Patocka and Darrell Patocka and wife Kathy, all of Enid, and Diana Bledsoe and husband Gregg, Bison. He has two grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
