Joel was born Dec. 1, 1922, in Henderson, Neb., the son of Abraham and Suzanna Toews.
He was a 1941 graduate of Kremlin High School.
He married Anna Voth in Enid. They had been married 38 years at her death in 1986.
He farmed most of his life in the Enid area. He volunteered at Cherokees Strip Regional Heritage Center, Railroad Museum of Oklahoma and the Midgley Museum. He still plays stand-up bass with a Civitan group and attended Enid Mennonite Brethren Church.
His children are Doug Toews and wife Gwen, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Darryl Toews and wife Gaye, Enid; Sandy Roberts and husband Richard, Spring, Texas; and Lori Dallavo and husband Scott, El Segundo, Calif. He has 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
