McCartney posts first win of season

By Cheryl Licklider, Staff Writer

Persistence paid off for Ross “Bub’’ McCartney as he put his McCartney/Jaynes Machine Shop-sponsored limited modified in the winner’s circle for the first time this season in racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.

McCartney raced off the outside pole and showed the way. He appeared unbeatable until he tangled with lapped traffic which saw Johnnie Rauschenberg take the lead. McCartney found the quick way around the next time around and put his ride out front.

McCartney held a strong line to the finish with Todd Decker, Travis Johnson, Rauschenberg and Kenny “The Iron Man” Morris rounding out the top five.

Kip Hughes made quick work of the modified field as he piloted his Precision Wireline/Pat McVicker sponsored-machine to his third win of the season.

“Colby and Gary took care of everything on the car and did an amazing job,” said Hughes. “I’m dedicating this win to the memory of Jack Unruh.”

Hughes led all 25 laps of the race. Jim Ciampi, Jon Herring Jr. and Dusty Robbins rounded out the top five.

Due to a low car count, the street and factory stock divisions ran a combined “A” feature.

Dustin “Hollywood” Allen dominated in street stocks posting his third win of the year.

Allen exploded off the outside pole and sported nearly a straight-away advantage in a single lap. Allen smoothly lapped the entire factory stock field to post the win, followed by Ryan Bohnstedt.

Defending champion Ronnie Ramer continued his reign over factory stock as he battled to the front to capture his third win of the season aboard his Watonga Butane/NAPA-sponsored Chevy, followed by Damon Seiger, Terry Costello, Milt David and Jarod Dowell.

Persistence paid off for Darin Busch as he put his pure stock in victory lane for the third time this season.

Mike Smith rushed off the front row to take the early lead. Andrew Kunkel stalled on the wall in turn two and put the track under caution in lap 7.

Busch made a daring inside challenge to take the point when the race went green. Busch raced away from the field with Mark Smith in hot pursuit. They were locked in a heated battle when another yellow flag flew in lap 20.

Busch continued his run on the restart and never looked back. Mark Smith held onto second, trailed by Kenny Jones, Mike Smith and Joe Adams.

Heat winners were Johnson and McCartney, limited modified; Hughes, modified; Allen and Costello, street and factory stock; and Mark Smith, Mike Smith and Busch, pure stock.

Enid Speedway Park’s next racing card is 7 p.m. Saturday.
