Timms claims 2nd modified ‘A’ win of year

By Cheryl Licklider, Staff Writer

Persistence paid off for Randy Timms as he drove his Western Flyer Express sponsored Shaw race car to his second modified ‘A’ feature win of the year in racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.

Jon Herring Jr. sped off the outside pole and led early in the quick-paced race. His luck ran out the third time around as Timms moved onto the point. Timms wasted no time and set up a 10-car length lead in less than a lap.

A caution flag flew as Kenny “The Iron Man” Morris flew off the track in turn four. Timms hurried away when the race went green with Bryan Rowland in the chase. It was a drag race for several laps, with Rowland making a low challenge into the lead at the race’s mid-point. Timms latched onto his bumper as the duo raced away from the field locked in a heated battle.

Lap 13 was lucky for Timms as he made his way back onto the point. Timms found the quick way around and despite a tangle with lapped traffic was never challenged on route to the checkered flag.

Travis Johnson continued his domination in street stock as he posted his fifth win of the year aboard his BB Machine/Big O Tire sponsored ride.

“The car worked good tonight and the track was good on the top,” said Johnson.

Pacesetter Dustin “Hollywood” Allen took command of the field only to see a caution wave the second time around. A red flag flew in lap three when the car piloted by Jo Herring Sr. blew a motor and erupted into flames. Allen resumed the hot seat when the race went green but his luck ran out as Johnson sailed onto the point the next time around.

With a clear track in front of him Johnson was unstoppable and took over a straight away lead to the line. James Lott posted second followed by Jerry Derr, Ryan Bohnstedt and Bill Beebe.

Mark Willson found track conditions to his liking as he piloted his Big O Tires/Hot Shot Power Wash sponsored limited modified to his third win of the season.

“The track was real good tonight you could be real aggressive,” said Willson.

Ryan Parli rushed off the outside pole and took command on the start, only to see a caution flag fly for a pile-up in turn one. Randy Bohnstedt took the point when the race went green, but was unable to hold off the hard charging Ross McCartney in lap nine. McCartney sailed away but spun the next time around which saw Willson take the point.

Todd Decker flew off onto the horse track and put the race under caution. Willson picked up where he left off on the restart and despite a late race caution took a strong lead to the line. Robert Elliott captured second with McCartney, Randy Miller and Bohnstedt rounding out the top five.

Brad “The Bullet” Costello conquered the field in factory stock as he put his JMAR Trucking/A&A Automotive sponsored Chevy in victory lane for the fourth time this season.

“We got lucky tonight,” said Costello. “We started up front and it was a one-line race track.”

Costello burst off the outside pole and led the early goings. Two cautions tightened up the field and put Earl Whitley into contention. A heated skirmish ensued between the duo. Costello found the fast way around and despite another late race yellow flag held the lead to the line.

Whitley held onto second followed by Ronnie Ramer, Justin Pruett and David Fisher.

Determination paid off for Tommy Bohnstedt as he picked up his second win of the year in pure stock.

Pacesetter Chris Clift showed the way but her run was short lived as a yellow flag waved for mayhem on the backstretch. Tim Smart took the point on the restart. Bohnstedt battled to the front and the heat was on. It was a head-to-head battle for several laps with Bohnstedt taking the lead in lap six and never looking back. Smart settled for second trailed by Justin Scott, Willis Adams and Clift.

Scott, Adams and Clift were disqualified in the post race tech inspection, which saw Michael Watts and Marcus Golay move into the top five.

Heat winners in modified were Timms and Rowland. Johnson and Allen won their heats in street stock. Limited modified heat wins went to Willson, McCartney, Shawn Ramsey and Mike Shenberger. Factory stock heat winners were Costello and Landon Maddox with James Goldman, Jr., Scott and Clift taking the honors in pure stock.

Enid Speedway Park will host the first ever $10,000 to win Modified Summer Nationals next weekend. Action will kick off at 7 p.m. Thursday with a test and tune session. Qualifiers will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday with the grand finale at 2 p.m. Sunday. The big money event will include action in the limited modified division featuring $2,500 for the first place winner.
