Young Gemmill gets the win
By Cheryl Licklider Staff Writer
Sixteen-year-old young gun Brendon Gemmill of Ponca City found track conditions to his liking as he piloted his Yes Finance/Snap On-sponsored Skyrocket chassis to his first career win in modifieds in racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.
“I feel awesome,” said Gemmill. “The car was great, the track was great. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Greg Burt exploded off the pole and took control of the race. A caution waved the second time around for mayhem in turn two. Another yellow flag waved before the race could get underway for a two-car pile up in turn four.
Burt headed up the restart, with Mike Roach and Troy Gemmill in the hunt. But all that effort was for naught as a three-car crash put the track back under caution. Burt resumed control when the track finally stayed green.
Another yellow flag waved in lap nine when Dusty Robbins spun and came to a rest in turn four. Burt sped away, with Brendon Gemmill in the hunt. The duo raced away from the field.
Gemmill charged onto the point in lap 17 and sailed to the finish line with a straightaway lead. His dad, Troy Gemmill, skillfully marched through the field to post second, trailed by Burt, Mike Roach and Kip Hughes
Randy “The Dandy” Miller conquered the competitive field in limited modifieds as he put his Buck’s Body Shop-sponsored ride in victory lane for the fourth time this season.
“It has been a good year,” said Miller. “I can’t thank Joel Dodson, the guys at Buck’s Body Shop and my crew enough. The track has really been smooth and good this year. Lonnie Colville and his crew are doing an awesome job.”
John Hoeltzel accelerated off the outside pole and led the early laps. A caution waved in the third lap when the car piloted by Joey Whitaker stalled on the front straight.
Hoeltzel resumed the hot seat on the restart, but the man on the move was Miller. Miller skillfully navigated through the field, and a heated skirmish ensued as the duo battled for the lead until another yellow flag waved when Korey Vendetti slammed into the wall in lap 11.
It was a drag race on the restart, with Miller taking the point with a daring inside challenge in lap 15. With a clear track in front of him Miller was unstoppable. Hoeltzel held onto second, with Tony Sessions, Steve Blunk and Randy Bohnstedt rounding out the top five. Hoeltzel was disqualified in the post-race tech inspection for failing to pull vacuum.
Dustin “Hollywood” Allen thrilled the hometown crowd as he piloted his Dirt Performance street stock to his first “A” feature win of the season.
“The car ran great tonight,” said Allen. “My crew, Aaron Bliss, Zach Meeks and Michael Bierle, did a great job of putting it back together after Tuesday.”
Allen raced off the pole and led the early going. Jerry Derr and Kenny “The Iron Man” Morris worked their way into contention but fell off the pace with flat tires at the race’s midpoint.
Allen hooked up smooth in the groove and ran a solid line to the checkered flag. A.J. Brochu captured second, followed by Link Shelton, Mark Smith and Ray Nulf.
Kenny Adams dominated in factory stock as he piloted his Platinum Motorsports-sponsored Chevy to the winner’s circle for the fifth time this season.
Adams raced off the pole and showed the way in the aggressive race. A yellow flag waved in lap four when Terry Costello stalled on the back straight.
Adams headed up the restart, with teammate Justin Scott in the hunt. Adams found the quick way around and sported a straightaway advantage when the track went back under caution in lap six.
The third time was a charm for Adams as he took command of the track. Scott held onto second, followed by Brandon Gibson, Dustin McNamara and Michael Smith.
Willis Adams sped off the pole and led all eight laps of the pure stock main to post his third win of the year aboard his Platinum Motorsports-sponsored Chevy. David Dunkin Sr. captured second, trailed by Tim Smart and Tommy Bohnstedt.
Heat winners in modified were Troy Gemmill, Brian Rowland and Roach.
Sessions and Hoeltzel won their heats in limited modified with Allen, Brochu and Derr posting the heat wins in street stock.
Factory stock heat winners were Adams and Dave Cameron, with Adams taking the honors in pure stock.
Enid Speedway Park’s next card of racing will be 8 p.m. Saturday.
