Johnson double winner at Enid Speedway Park

By Cheryl Licklider, Commentary

Travis Johnson continued his dominance in limited modified as he piloted his BB Machine/Jerry Dunkin Well Service/Big O Tires-sponsored car to his third win of the season in racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.

Logan Macy rushed off the pole and headed up the competitive field. But the man on the move was Landon Maddox, who took command in lap four, but all his effort was for naught as a caution waved.

Macy reclaimed the point, but was unable to hold off the hard-charging Maddox. who quickly set a 10-car length lead.

Kyle O’Neal flew off the front straight and came to a rest in front of the grandstands, which put the race under back under caution.

Maddox took command when the green flag waved with Johnson in hot pursuit. The duo raced away from the field locked in a heated battle. Johnson took control in lap 12 — and despite three late race cautions — took nearly a straight-away lead to the checkered flag.

Maddox held onto second, followed by Scott Parli, Craig Ridgeway and Jimmy Manharth.

Johnson then claimed his second win of the season in his BB Machine/Big O Tires/Michaels Welding-sponsored street stock.

“I didn’t think I was going to win after I drove off the end of the track,” said Johnson.

Jon Herring Sr. headed up the field, but his glory was short-lived as Johnson took command with a daring high challenge in lap two.

Johnson’s luck ran out the next time around as he went too high in turn four which saw Herring reclaim the lead.

Johnson moved back into contention at the race’s mid-point and a heated duel ensued between him and Herring.

It was a drag race until the white flag lap when Johnson went high in turn one and drove his Dunsworth Machine powered-Chevy to the win. Herring settled for second, followed by Tim Gardner, Ryan Bohnstedt and Wesley Krukenberg.

Johnson capped a successful night by being the dash for cash winner.

Kip Hughes put another notch on his belt as he navigated his Precision Wireline-sponsored Dunsworth Machine powered modified to his third win of the year.

“I want to thank God, Goodyear and Megan,” said Hughes. “I couldn’t have done it without my crew, sponsors and Pat McVicker.”

Hughes exploded off the pole and boasted a straight- away advantage in a mere lap. With a clear green track in front of him, Hughes appeared untouchable. Three late race cautions tightened up the field.

Hughes took control when the track finally went green and ran a strong line to the finish.

Bud Longpine captured second with Dusty Robbins, Jon Herring Jr. and Jeremy Green trailing at the finish.

Jason Biggs posted his first win of the year in factory stock.

Biggs raced off the pole and led the early goings. A three-car pile-up put the race under caution at the top of the second lap. Biggs picked up where he left off and sported a 10-car length lead when Milt David spun in lap five and brought out another yellow flag.

The third start was a charm for Biggs as he raced away and never looked back.

Ronnie Ramer, Mark Smith, Terry Costello and Jesse Brooks rounded out the top five.

Mike Smith ended his brother Mark’s four-week reign in pure stock as he clinched the win in the “A” feature.

Pacesetter Mike Smith showed the way. A yellow waved the second time around when Andrew Kunkel rolled to a stop on the back straight.

Tim Smart took the point on the restart with Mark Smith in hot pursuit. It was a drag race for several laps with Smith taking the quick way around.

A caution at the race’s mid-point tightened up the field and saw Mike Smith on his brother’s bumper. Mike Smith took command with a daring challenge in lap 11 and never looked back.

Mark Smith settled for second, trailed by James Goldman, Smart and Darin Busch. Goldman was penalized one position for a jump start which saw Smart inherit third.

Limited modified heat winners were Johnson, Logan Macy and Johnie Rauschenberg. Hughes took top honors in modified.

Johnson and Biggs posted the heat wins in street and factory stock respectively.

Pure stock heat winners were Mike Smith and Mark Smith.

Enid Speedway Park’s next card of racing will be 7 p.m. Saturday.
