Herrings post wins at Speedway

By Cheryl Licklider, Staff Writer

Woodward father-son duo of Jon Herring Sr. and Jr. found the haul to Enid profitable Saturday as they both posted “A” feature wins in racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.

Jon Jr. showed his winning ways as he navigated his Herring Services/DWL Supply/Justin Thompson-sponsored Hugh-es Chassis to his second triumph of the season in the modified main.

“The track was tricky tonight, I really had to drive,’’ said Herring. “My car ran great.’’

Herring, the pole-sitter, led from flag-to-flag. Dusty Robbins and Richard Shearon were second and third.

Jon Sr. had it all his way in street stock as he piloted his Herring Services/DWL Supp-ly/Justin Thompson-sponsored ride to his first win of the year.

“The Ford was running good tonight,’’ said Herring.

Dustin “Hollywood’’ Allen rushed off the pole and looked to be the man to beat. His luck ran out the second lap as he scattered parts on the back straight and rolled to a stop in turn four.

Herring claimed the lead when the green flag flew and took over a straight-away lead to the finish line.

Ryan Bohnstedt, Wesley Krukenburg, James Mayhugh and Allen rounded out the top five.

Travis Johnson thrilled the hometown crowd with a dazzling victory run in limited modified posting his second win of the season.

Johnson exploded off the second row and set up a straight-away lead in a mere two laps. Johnson skillfully lapped nearly half of the field and posted the win with half-a-lap advantage.

Dustin Choate captured second, followed by Ryan Parli, Travis Jordan and Steve Blunk.

Brad “The Bullet” Costello dominated in factory stock as he led from flag-to-flag for his first win of the year aboard his A & A Automotive/Ma and Pa’s-sponsored Duns-worth Machine powered Chevy.

“I couldn’t have done it without my grandpa and Dunsworth’s,” said Costello. “We blew it up last week and just got it put together last night.”

Pacesetter Costello showed the way in the 20-lap race, only to see Milt David spin in turn four and bring out a yellow flag. David spun on the restart and kept the race under caution.

Costello reclaimed the point when the race resumed and was unstoppable. Ronnie Ramer charged through the field to claim second, followed by John Whitley, David Fisher and Jason Biggs.

Mark Smith continued his dominance in pure stock as he put his Speedtech Automotive/Rocket Radio/Mike Hoffman Photography-sponsored Chevy in victory lane for the fourth time in a row.

Two yellow flags waved before the crashing, bashing pure stocks could get their race underway. Smith hurried off the outside pole and headed up the field when the race finally went green and wasted no time in setting up a straight-away advantage in a mere two laps.

But all that effort was for naught as Lonnie Wilson flew off the track the next time around and put the track back under caution.

Smith picked up where he left off only to see Michael Watts slam into the wall on the back straight and bring the yellow flag back out. A three car pile-up on the restart kept the race under caution.

Smith continued his run when the green finally waved and never looked back.

James Goldman captured second, trailed by Joe Adams, Tim Smart and Bob Goodpasture.

Heat winners in limited modified were Choate and Johnson. Herring won in modifieds.

Allen won his heat in street stock. Costello won in factory stock.

Pure stock heat winners were Adams and Smith.

Enid Speedway Park’s next card of racing will be 7 p.m. Saturday.
