City, agencies should start discussions on programs now

It’s time to talk.

The end of the city of Enid’s fiscal year is coming up in three months. So, it’s time for city officials to talk about the budget for the upcoming year.

Last year was a tough one during budget discussions. The city made more than $1 million in cuts from the general fund to recoup money to build a bridge on West Randolph to replace the one that collapsed under the weight of a fire truck. The cuts also were made because the general fund balance had been falling in recent years, leaving the city little cushion in the event of a major problem.

A number of agencies, including PEGASYS, Enid’s public-access television station, and Main Street Enid took budget hits.

It seemed to us the discussion over the budget was pretty short, especially with respect to the agencies such as PEGASYS, Main Street and Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse.

We’d like to see the city take up these agency budget items earlier this year and start discussions now. These agencies are going to come to the city asking for money so they can get their programs set for the coming year.

City officials are going to have their ideas on how the money should be spent.

Neither side should spring any surprises on the other side. It’s best to work together as soon as possible. It really is time for the city to start making its intentions known and for the agencies to also begin working on making their case for their needs.
