A stranded pontoon boat is docked at the eastern end of Portage Lake in the village of Onekama, Mich. Unusually low water levels on the Great Lakes are causing problems for boaters in small harbor towns such as Onekama, which is linked to Lake Michigan by a man-made channel. The Great Lakes, the world's biggest freshwater system, are dropping because of drought and climbing temperatures, a trend that accelerated with this year's almost snowless winter and scorching summer.
