Lucile Wise sits on the wing of a basic trainer plane in 1943 while during training at Avenger Field Air Base in Sweetwater, Texas. The Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II, the first women to fly military aircraft, fought hard to receive veteran status and didn't get it until 1977, long after their history had been buried. In 2012, they are celebrated at the 10th annual gala for Wings Over the Rockies. There are seven surviving WASPs in Colorado - four will be at the gala, plus 10 from other states. Wise, 92, is a veteran WASP. On Nov. 5, 2012, she was treated to a ride on the plane - the same model as the one she first trained during World War II. (AP Photo/The Denver Post, Helen H. Richardson)
