ARDMORE, Okla. —
Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation will host a fall cattle seminar to provide regional livestock producers with the information to make better, more informed decisions about purchasing feed, marketing their calf crop and managing their pastures as well as a discussion by a large animal veterinarian on recently encountered diseases.
The workshop will be 1-5 p.m. Thursday at the Noble Foundation Kruse Auditorium. During the seminar, Noble Foundation consultants will discuss the feed and cattle market outlook, supplementation, weaning nutrition, and managing pastures for the long term.
“The favorable weather this growing season for much of Oklahoma and North Texas has allowed some needed pasture recovery,” said Dan Childs, Noble Foundation agricultural economist. “With lower cattle numbers, a strong cattle market and prospects for a bumper corn crop this fall, cow-calf producers have a lucrative marketing season in store.”
Dr. D.L. Step, Oklahoma State University extension veterinarian, also will answer questions on cattle diseases encountered in recent years that have challenged producers.
This year’s seminar features a guest speaker, Jude Capper. Capper is an independent sustainability consultant and will discuss utilizing modern technologies for sustainable beef production.
“Capper is an active advocate for the beef industry and works diligently to explain the positive impact of cattle producers on the environment,” said Deke Alkire, Noble Foundation livestock consultant. ”You will not want to miss her talk.”
Capper’s current research and outreach focuses on modeling the environmental impact of livestock production systems, specifically dairy and beef. Her professional goal is to communicate the importance of livestock industry sustainability and the factors affecting sustainability to enhance the knowledge and understanding of food production.
