Waynoka students busy with livestock shows

ENID, Okla. — The week of March 9-14, Waynoka FFA and 4-H members participated in the Woodward District Livestock Show. Members competed by showing their pig, sheep, goat and cattle. The highlight of the week is being chosen for the district premium sale. This year, the judges selected 98 out of 1,100 animals entered in the show for the sale.

The Woodward District Premium Sale was the evening of March 14 and started with a steak dinner for exhibitors, parents and buyers. Premium buyers bid ont the animals, but do not actually keep the animals. The funds received help members continue with their show projects. Members from Waynoka who were chosen to participate in the sale were Josiah Darr, wether goat; Jillian Whipple, natural lamb; Taylor Trennepohl, Dorset lamb; and Draven Smith, wether goat.

Woodward Chamber of Commerce Livestock Scholarship Committee also awarded nine Bud Nelson Memorial Scholarships. Whipple, a senior FFA member, was selected to receive one of the scholarships.

Many Waynoka exhibitors also traveled to Oklahoma City to participate in Oklahoma Youth Expo Livestock Show. This show is the largest junior livestock show in the United States.

The evening of March 7, Waynoka FFA showed appreciation to their parents or guardians by providing a meal catered by Honey Wheat Café. They were served a meal of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and hot rolls.

Bees are venturing out to visit the new flowers. Keep a close watch on your garden. Often, helpful pest-destroying insects are out, getting ready to work for you, also. These, and the bees helpfully pollinating flowers, shouldn’t be discouraged by the undiscriminating spraying of insecticides.

Yet, recent survey data suggest only 18 percent of beef-cow operations in the United States evaluate the cowherd for pregnancy. This is unfortunate, since a large portion of the financial losses attributed to infertility in beef cows is attributed to maintaining open cows.
