ENID, Okla. — Drinking rotten milk, sniffing spices such as ginger and garlic, and standing outside in the freezing weather for six hours to look at smelly cattle, pigs and sheep most likely does not appeal to the average high school boy or girl.

Instead, they would rather be texting or tweeting about the latest Thunder basketball game.

However, on Jan. 23, 15 Alva high school and middle school FFA members woke up early to travel to Tonkawa for the Northern Oklahoma College interscholastic competition. An interscholastic contest focuses on a variety of competitions, so everyone has an option to compete in his/her favorite area.

Competing in food science were Rylan Castleberry, Cameron Gaisford, Kenzie Kraft and Jentrey Lancaster. The sole dairy competitor from Alva was Ridge Hughbanks. The livestock judging team consisted of Terrill Burton, Cole Koppitz, Cathy Mapes and Julie Owen competing in the intermediate division. Competing in the senior division were Tanner Burton, Tyler Burton, Kory Dietz, Courtney Mapes, Dakota Nusser and Traci Owen.

The food science and dairy competitors got the feel of the competitions and will be prepared for upcoming contests. The intermediate livestock judging team placed third ,with Cathy Mapes placing second individually. The senior team received fifth.

Continuing on to another livestock judging contest were the same individuals along with Ross Murrow. The Northwest District Livestock Judging Contest was held in Enid on Jan. 30. After judging eight classes of cattle, swine, shee, and goats, contestants gave oral reasons and answered questions to explain their placing. In the senior 4-H division, the team consisting of Cole Koppitz, Cathy Mapes, Ross Murrow and Julie Owen received second. Individual top 10 placers were Murrow, second; Owen, fifth; and Cathy Mapes, seventh. In the senior FFA division, the team consisting of Tyler Burton, Kory Dietz, Courtney Mapes and Traci Owen received second, and the team consisting of Tanner Burton, Terrill Burton and Dakota Nusser received fifth. Individual top 10 placers were Burton, third, and Dietz, fourth.
