Sorghum series gives information on crop

ENID, Okla. — Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service in cooperation with Oklahoma Sorghum Commission and United Sorghum Checkoff Program will provide the Northwest Oklahoma Educational Program Series across the area the last week in January.

Two of the 10 meeting locations will be in Major County. At 10 a.m. Jan. 29, the sorghum program series will be in Fairview at the city office training room.

Also on Jan. 29, the second Major County sorghum program series event will be at Meno Community Center at 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be available at each location provided by United Sorghum Checkoff Program.

The 2014 Northwest Oklahoma Grain Sorghum Educational Program Series will focus on grain sorghum soil fertility needs and insect management, particularly with regard to the sorghum headworm, and a decision tool will be introduced to help determine when to treat this pest. Discussion of grain sorghum production including herbicide choices, planting dates and rates and new technologies available to growers also will be a part of the meeting.

Speakers for this event are Brian Arnall, Oklahoma State University assistant professor of precision nutrient management; Tom Royer, OSU associate professor and IPM coordinator; and Rick Kochenower, OCES area agronomist.

Jesse McCurry, USCP regional director, will provide highlights of the sorghum checkoff.

Anyone with questions about the series should go by Major County OSU Extension Center located in the courthouse at 500 E. Broadway or call (580) 227-3786.

Bees are venturing out to visit the new flowers. Keep a close watch on your garden. Often, helpful pest-destroying insects are out, getting ready to work for you, also. These, and the bees helpfully pollinating flowers, shouldn’t be discouraged by the undiscriminating spraying of insecticides.
