Wheat crop topic of Tuesday meeting

ENID, Okla. — Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service will host a wheat meeting 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chisholm Trail Expo Center.

Jeff Edwards, Extension wheat specialist, will lead off with a discussion of the 2012-13 wheat variety trial yield results. He will present the new varieties to look for, as well as proven varieties with established performance.

Bob Hunger, Extension entomologist, then will discuss disease pressures brought about by aphids, in particular the oat bird cherry aphid and barley yellow dwarf virus.

Kim Anderson, grain marketing specialist, will offer his insight as to the wheat market for the remainder of 2013 and then turn to the upcoming 2014 harvest. Anderson also will touch on corn and grain sorghum marketing.

U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported in July wheat production for Oklahoma was forecast to be 115.5 million bushels, which is 1 percent higher than the estimate in June but 25 percent below harvest in 2012.

Harvested acres — estimated at 3.5 million acres — also were down from last month and last year.

Average yield was forecast at 33 bushels an acre, up 3 bushels from last month, but down 3 bushels from 2012, according to NASS.

Tuesday’s meeting will conclude by 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. Call the Garfield County Extension Office at (580) 237-1228 if you plan to attend.

Nelson is Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service ag educator for Garfield County.

Bees are venturing out to visit the new flowers. Keep a close watch on your garden. Often, helpful pest-destroying insects are out, getting ready to work for you, also. These, and the bees helpfully pollinating flowers, shouldn’t be discouraged by the undiscriminating spraying of insecticides.
