Waukomis students earn livestock honors

Waukomis FFA members exhibited livestock at the Tulsa State Fair.

Mackenna Mack exhibited the first-place heavyweight steer. Kaci Mack exhibited the second-place heavyweight steer. Garrett Sharp exhibited the second-place Limousin steer, Blue Ribbon Sale steer and the champion Chianiana prospect steer. Shane Christmas showed the second-place commercial heifer and the third-place crossbred steer. Carrie Collins showed the fourth-place shorthorn and heifer, fourth- and sixth-place crossbred steers and participated in the shorthorn exhibitor showmanship contest.

Riley Benda exhibited the second-place shorthorn heifer, reserve champion shorthorn heifer, first-place Maine prospect steer and third-place Charolais prospect steer. Andrew Mack placed fifth with his Angus steer, and Devin Coffey participated in the junior goat showmanship contest and showed two meat goat wethers.

Christmas and Coffey participated in the junior livestock judging contest as individuals.

Waukomis FFA officers recently attended the northwest district COLT conference in Enid. The chapter collected more than 100 pounds of food items for Oklahoma Food Bank. Officers attending were president, Sharp; vice president, Andrew Mack; secretary, Haylie Simunek; reporter, Shae Roberts; and sentinel, Christmas. They attended workshops held by the state officer team on becoming better leaders. Also attending were student teacher Natalie Harmeyer and adviser Tim Vanover.

The chapter recently held its annual hayride and hamburger fry. Approximately 35 members braved the wet, cold conditions to help with the event.

The chapter also completed its annual Blue & Gold fundraiser. Top sellers were first, Christmas; second, Kaylee Grider; third, Sharp; fourth, Andrew Mack; fifth, Coffey; and sixth, Roberts. They each received a free pair of Justin boots or an $80 gift certificate to Eskimo Joes.

Members took 26 horticulture exhibits to the State Fair of Oklahoma. Ricki Hess placed third in blue gamma and fourth in Indian grass. Brittany Bingham placed fifth in little bluestem and eighth in Indian grass. Taylor McElroy placed ninth with her floral design made from silk flowers. Sharp placed fifth with his hard red winter wheat.

The sporting clay teams recently competed in the Northwest District clay shoot at Fort Supply. Junior team members Andrew Mack, Dalton McFarland, Coffey and Blaise Newman placed second and qualified for the state tournament Saturday in Edmond.

Senior team members are Christmas, Aaron Parks and Jerrica Tice.

Garrett Sharp just returned from the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. He qualified to attend by having the state-winning agri-science fair project. He did a presentation and interview on different wheat classes and their glutens, along with milling and baking difference between the classes.

He was accompanied by his parents, Gary and Janelle Sharp; adviser Vanover; and student teacher Harmeyer.

Tyler Terrel, Collins, Roberts, Jess Click, Michael Allen, Coffey and Eric Towers competed in the junior opening/closing ceremonies contest and the junior FFA quiz contest Oct. 13 at Cimarron High School.
