Taking his turn as leader

FAIRVIEW — Bobby Smith, an Oklahoma man who has spent over a quarter-century in the livestock business, recently was named to one of the most prestigious positions in the livestock marketing industry

On June 27, Smith was named president of Livestock Marketing Association, which represents auction marketers across the country and informs them of changes that occur in the industry. While serving his two-year term as head of the national organization, Smith will rack up plenty of frequent flier miles traveling to represent members of the organization.

“This is my livelihood,” said Smith. “It’s something I care about, and if it means me steering the wheel for a couple years, well then I’ll do it.”

It has been quite a journey for Smith to get to this point.

He re-opened Fairview Sale Barn in 1975, a business his father previously had run from the 1950s through 1967.

Local producers bring their cattle to the barn to auction them off weekly, and Smith said he will continue to attend the auctions, despite his busy schedule.

Smith has been part of Oklahoma Livestock Marketing Association, a branch of LMA, for 30 years and has served in many capacities on the organization’s board.

He was elected to LMA’s board in 2002 and was voted president by more than 800 LMA members across the country.

Smith said the primary duty of LMA is helping producers get a fair price for their cattle at auctions, because without price options, “how would we decide what certain cattle are worth?” Smith said.

Beyond helping the national organization fulfill its basic duty of price discovery, Smith said he is concerned with humane-handling issues and a new U.S. Department of Agriculture proposal to enact stricter livestock identification laws.

He said he hopes the USDA identification laws remain voluntary, because a new, mandatory identification system would initiate additional costs that some livestock producers wouldn’t be able to cover.
