4-H students honored



Garfield County 4-H members recently hosted the monthly meeting of Garfield County Rural Rotatory at the Okla-homa State Univer-sity Extension Center.

Leadership awards were presented by Gene Hisey to Kalie Clickner of Pioneer-Pleasant Vale 4-H Club and Courtney Skaggs of Chisholm 4-H Club.

Clickner is a junior at Pioneer High School and the daughter of Leslie and Sally Clickner, of Enid.

She conducted 363 citizenship and leadership activities during her eight-year 4-H career. Her favorite activity was Girl Power, a self-esteem program for girls ages 9-13. She worked with girls learning about babysitting, grooming, nutrition, journalizing and fashion. She held offices of Garfield County 4-H vice president, club president and Northwest District reporter. She is recipient of the News & Eagle Achievement Award and attended Denver Western National Round-up and Citizenship Washington Focus trips.

Skaggs is a senior at Chisholm High School and the daughter of Michael and Tammy Skaggs, of Enid.

She conducted 164 citizenship and leadership activities during her nine-year 4-H career. She was coordinator of the Garfield County Make A Difference Day project. She worked with the YWCA Women’s Crisis Center and donated more than 101 personal kits to the shelter. She held offices of Garfield County 4-H treasurer, reporter and executive. She attended National 4-H Congress in Atlanta and Citizenship Washington Focus Trip. She also was a state 4-H FCS project winner.



Strate takes 1st place



Justin Strate, of Garber, earned first-place honors in the beef production placement proficiency award area during the 82nd Okla-homa FFA Convention April 30.

Strate won the award for his work with his family’s registered Angus cattle business. He performs cattle management practices, facility maintenance and prepares cattle for show and sales.

“The chance I have been given by being involved with the Strate Family Cattle Co. has rewarded me with numerous job opportunities,” Strate said. “Angus genetics have influenced more than 60 percent of America’s beef cow herd making it not only an important factor in my job, but also in numerous other herds across the country.”

The beef production placement proficiency award is designed to recognize students who are involved in a supervised agricultural experience related to using effective management to produce and market beef.

This award is sponsored on the state level by The Noble Foundation and Grissom Implement, of Prague. Fort Dodge Animal Health and Midwest Precision Molasses Supplements serve as national sponsors.

The 17-year-old Garber FFA member is the son of Jim and Janet Strate. His agricultural education instructor and FFA adviser is Mark Sneary.
