Pettus places at state

public speaking contest

Kelsey Pettus, of Cimarron FFA, placed third at the state FFA public speaking contest in Stillwater recently.

She also placed first at the P.I. and district level to qualify for the state competition. She was a member of the livestock judging team, along with Ross Mencke and Christian Gunning, that competed at the state FFA livestock judging contest.

Kremlin-Hillsdale FFA

members receive honors

Ryan Johnson, Robert Parrish and Matt Streck, of Kremlin-Hillsdale FFA, received the prestigious State FFA Degree, the highest degree of active membership awarded by the Oklahoma FFA Association.

The honor is bestowed upon high school senior FFA members who have demonstrated outstanding supervised agricultural experience programs and leadership activities. Only 687 of the more than 24,000 Oklahoma FFA members have advanced through the Discovery, Greenhand and Chapter Degrees to earn the state honor.

Recipients received their degrees during the 82nd State FFA Convention in Oklahoma City. Their FFA adviser is Mike Parrish.

All recipients attended a banquet in their honor and received the gold state FFA degree charm and a plaque. The degree recognition is co-sponsored by Murphy-Brown Farms, Oklahoma LP Gas Research Marketing and Safety Commission, The Craig Foundation, Warren CAT, Shawnee Milling Co., Livingston Machinery, Oklahoma Farm Bureau and Oklahoma CareerTech Foundation.

Johnson received the academic excellence award.

Only 72 of the 687 state FFA degree recipients were chosen to receive the honor. Recipients received a medallion on a red and white ribbon to wear over their official FFA dress and recognition for their accomplishment during the State FFA Convention.

Students were selected based on grade point average, class rank and ACT score.

Cherokee FFA members

busy with activities

By Kyla Goetz

Cherokee FFA chapter recently participated in the PI speech contest hosted by Burlington FFA.

Garrett Starks, Cherokee parliamentarian, received second place and qualified for district in the 8th, 9th and 10th general agricultural division.

The horticulture class has been busy with raising plants in the greenhouse. The class has learned how to grow everything from vegetables to flowers and foliage plants. The plants are now for sale by the FFA chapter, which funded different projects for the class to grow. The chapter will sell the plants after school and on the weekends. Plant prices will be 50 cents for single plants and $8 for hanging baskets.

The chapter banquet will be 6 p.m. May 13 at Cherokee First Baptist Church. The dinner for the evening will be pork loin, brisket, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, rolls and dessert. Awards will be presented and new officers installed.

Students receive FFA

career passports

Several northwest Oklahoma FFA members received the Agricultural Education Career Passport at the 82nd State FFA Convention in Oklahoma City.

Sponsors are MacDon Inc. and Oklahoma FFA Alumni Association.

The career passport is awarded to students who have prepared to enter the agricultural work force through curricular and evaluation activities established by industry. Students must complete coursework in their chosen field, be graduating seniors and successfully complete objective and skill-based competency tests.

Members from Alva receiving the award were Ashley Hamil, Shannon Rose and Kellie Whipple.

From Laverne were Heather Baird, Audra Halliburton, Levi Mitchell, Ryan Nelson and Hope Thomas.

From Waukomis were Lyndsay Burton, Trent Milacek and Kevin Thedford.
